Thanks to a little tip off from Amber at Rowan & Oak, I found this free reversible bucket hat pattern from Oliver + S (sweetest childrens clothing patterns ever). I made their adorable kimono pajamas for both kids two years ago. Well, we just booked a snorkeling & beach trip to the Florida Keys & Sanibel Island at the beginning of the kids’ school vacation in June, so new summer sun hats are definitely in order. I sourced the fabric from men’s dress shirts (well, not too dressy, as you can tell by the fabric), so these are free and upcycled. Love that!
My boy totally wanted to do this project with me, and stuck with it through the first round of cutting, ironing, and sewing.
Then he lost interest in doing the work himself, but boy was he persistent in reminding me that it needed to be done! Well, I’m a sucker for a child pleading for a handsewn, and this came together pretty quickly, so we got it done in short order.
He was so delighted when he came downstairs on Sunday morning to find his hat waiting for him. I think he loved knowing that I was spending my time on something just for him.
He spent the day chasing butterflies….
…and chipmunks – in his hat.
From this test run he has declared his hat needs a chin strap, so that’s my sewing machine’s next order of business. And then on to a polka dotted and striped version for his sister!
